- 🌱 From Direct Help Water (Thannir) ➜ WESDA Swiss
Empowering communities in Northern & Eastern Sri Lanka — from emergency aid to lasting change.
- 📜 Background
Following the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka (2009), many regions — especially the Northern and Eastern provinces — have continued to face significant socio-economic challenges. Access to basic needs such as clean drinking water, education, and sustainable livelihoods remains limited for many communities.
In response, committed individuals from Switzerland — including members of the Swiss public and the Tamil diaspora — came together to establish a small but highly impactful initiative: Direct Help Water (Thannir). What began as urgent water relief evolved into a mission rooted in dignity, transparency, and direct community engagement.
- 💧 Our Journey — Direct Help Water (Thannir)
Direct Help Water focused on practical, direct support, particularly in:
Clean drinking water
Providing clean drinking water to families and villages
Small-scale agriculture
Supporting small-scale agriculture, such as home vegetable gardens
Emergency aid
Delivering emergency aid during crises, including COVID-19 and natural disasters
School & community support
Assisting schools and vulnerable communities
✅ Despite being a small organization, Direct Help Water successfully implemented numerous projects with low administrative costs and a strong commitment to transparency and impact.
- ✨ Our Philosophy
From the beginning, our approach has been guided by one core principle:
Support should empower people—not create dependency.
We believe that:
- People should not rely on continuous external aid
- Communities should be enabled to build their own sustainable income
- Access to water is a foundation for dignity, health, and independence
Especially in Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka, water is not just a basic need—it is the key to self-sufficiency and long-term development.
- 🔄 Why WESDA Swiss?
Today, the global context is changing. Many international NGOs have reduced or withdrawn their funding from Sri Lanka. However, the needs on the ground remain urgent.
This is why we are evolving. Direct Help Water is transitioning into WESDA Swiss — Water. Education. Sustainable Development Alliance. This transformation reflects a broader vision:
Expanding beyond water
Providing clean drinking water to families and villages
