Following the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka (2009), many regions โ especially the Northern and Eastern provinces โ have continued to face significant socio-economic challenges. Access to basic needs such as clean drinking water, education, and sustainable livelihoods remains limited for many communities.
In response, committed individuals from Switzerland โ including members of the Swiss public and the Tamil diaspora โ came together to establish a small but highly impactful initiative: Direct Help Water (Thannir). What began as urgent water relief evolved into a mission rooted in dignity, transparency, and direct community engagement.

Direct Help Water focused on practical, direct support, particularly in:
Clean drinking water
Providing water wells, filtration systems and safe access to families and entire villages.
Small-scale agriculture
Home vegetable gardens, seeds & tools to boost food security and local resilience.
Emergency aid
During COVID-19, natural disasters & crises โ rapid response where most needed.
School & community support
Assisting vulnerable schools, children, and families with essential supplies.
โ Despite being a small organization, Direct Help Water successfully implemented numerous projects with low administrative costs and a strong commitment to transparency and impact.
