WESDA Swiss

๐Ÿ“œ Background

Following the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka (2009), many regions โ€” especially the Northern and Eastern provinces โ€” have continued to face significant socio-economic challenges. Access to basic needs such as clean drinking water, education, and sustainable livelihoods remains limited for many communities.

In response, committed individuals from Switzerland โ€” including members of the Swiss public and the Tamil diaspora โ€” came together to establish a small but highly impactful initiative: Direct Help Water (Thannir). What began as urgent water relief evolved into a mission rooted in dignity, transparency, and direct community engagement.

๐Ÿ’ง Our Journey โ€” Direct Help Water (Thannir)

Direct Help Water focused on practical, direct support, particularly in:

๐Ÿšฐ

Clean drinking water

Providing water wells, filtration systems and safe access to families and entire villages.

๐ŸŒฝ

Small-scale agriculture

Home vegetable gardens, seeds & tools to boost food security and local resilience.

๐Ÿ†˜

Emergency aid

During COVID-19, natural disasters & crises โ€” rapid response where most needed.

๐Ÿ“š

School & community support

Assisting vulnerable schools, children, and families with essential supplies.

โœ… Despite being a small organization, Direct Help Water successfully implemented numerous projects with low administrative costs and a strong commitment to transparency and impact.

โœจ Our Philosophy

From the beginning, our approach has been guided by one core principle:

Support should empower peopleโ€”not create dependency.

We believe that:

๐Ÿšซ People should not rely on continuous external aid

๐ŸŒพ Communities should be enabled to build their own sustainable income

๐Ÿ’ง Access to water is a foundation for dignity, health, and independence

Especially in Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka, water is not just a basic needโ€”it is the key to self-sufficiency and long-term development.

๐Ÿ”„ Why WESDA Swiss?

Today, the global context is changing. Many international NGOs have reduced or withdrawn their funding from Sri Lanka. However, the needs on the ground remain urgent.

This is why we are evolving. Direct Help Water is transitioning into WESDA Swiss โ€” Water. Education. Sustainable Development Alliance. This transformation reflects a broader vision:

๐ŸŽฏ

Expanding beyond water

Including education and sustainable development as pillars of systemic change.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Professional structures & governance

Stronger monitoring, strategic planning and long-term partnerships.

๐Ÿค

Scalable impact & alliances

Building durable cooperation with NGOs, institutions, and responsible donors.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Our Organizational Model

WESDA Swiss operates with a clear dual-structure to guarantee local relevance and Swiss integrity:

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ WESDA Swiss (Switzerland)

Headquarters & fundraising hub

  • Fundraising in Switzerland
  • Partnerships with NGOs, institutions, and donors
  • Strategic direction and project approval
  • Ensuring transparency & Swiss quality standards

๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ WESDA Swiss (Sri Lanka)

Officially registered local branch
Managed by qualified and experienced board members

  • Needs assessment & community engagement
  • Project design and proposal development
  • Implementation and monitoring
  • Financial reporting & accountability

๐Ÿ” Both entities work in synergy: Swiss fundraising fuels on-the-ground action, while local leadership ensures cultural relevance and speed.

โšก Our Approach โ€” Direct, Transparent, Sustainable

๐Ÿ“‰

Minimal administrative overhead

We keep bureaucracy lean โ€” more than 85% of funds go directly to project implementation.

๐Ÿค

Direct engagement with communities

No intermediaries, no unnecessary layers โ€” we listen and act together with villagers.

๐Ÿ“Š

Transparent reporting

Donors receive detailed reports incl. photos, budgets and outcome metrics.

๐ŸŒฑ

Sustainable, long-term solutions

From water committees to agricultural training: we build lasting capacity.

๐Ÿš€ Looking Forward โ€” WESDA Swiss
